Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi is still on her official visit to China. She arrived in Beijing and met with Chinese Communist Party leader Hu Jintao on Wednesday. Pelosi's visit has led thousands of petitioners to take to the streets of Beijing, urging the speaker to pay attention to China's human rights crisis.
While U.S. House of Representatives speaker Nancy Pelosi met Chinese Communist Party leader Hu Jintao in Beijing on May 27, petitioners protested outside the information office of China's State Council.
Some wore clothes covered in slogans and held banners. Others spray painted the building with phrases like "Pelosi we warmly welcome you," and "Human rights matter, down with corruption." Protesters threw tens of thousands of leaflets.
Armed police dispersed the protesters. Around 100 petitioners were arrested and taken to a nearby police station.
This was not the first protest to occur during Pelosi's visit. On May 25, thousands of petitioners gathered at the Beijing South Railway Station to protest. The next morning, authorities blocked the gate to the station.
Pelosi is in China as part of a congressional delegation. The delegation's focus is on clean energy and climate change.
Pelosi also met with 93-year-old Catholic bishop Aloysius Jin Luxian last Sunday to discuss religious freedom issues.
