The sidelines of the Jefferson Cup are always packed with college coaches on the lookout for talented recruits. But one scout at the tournament's girls' weekend had an eye on an even younger demographic, quietly visiting several Under-13 and U-14 matches and speaking with coaches.
Tiffany Roberts Sahaydak is co-head coach -- alongside her husband, Tim Sahaydak -- of the women's soccer team at Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond. But last weekend she exchanged her VCU gear for a U.S. Soccer kit in her new role as a scout for the national team setup.
It's part of the new approach being taken by April Heinrichs and Jill Ellis, the vastly experienced coaches who were named technical director and development director, respectively, for the U.S. women's youth program earlier this year. Roberts Sahaydak spoke to Potomac Soccer Wire's Charles Boehm about her role and how she hopes to help identify and elevate some fresh faces for the international level.
