In this clip from www.artistshousemusic.org - Nashville producer and session drummer Dan Needham talks about why anyone seriously considering a career as a session musician might need to relocate in order to be successful. He also explains why musicians looking to network for session work would be best served by talking to musicians who play instruments other than their own.
How would I get my foot in the door if I wanted to be a part of a touring band?

@EddieRamon -- there are still a ton of sessions done, not only in Nashville, but nationwide. I remain busy with session work as a guitarist but now most of our work is done over the internet with clients worldwide. ML

@EddieRamon Yup for tours....especially in the pop scene....if a pop artist has a live band backing them up yeah thats a session band right there it's just covered up with "Touring band" lol

@EddieRamon It depends what kind of session music you mean, as live music is at its peak there are more session musician jobs for playing live. even looking at a contemporary artist such as Dizzie Rascal, he has started playing with a live band including musicians such as Guthrie Govan on guitar. so yes it is still "alive"

Is the session business still even alive? I don't hear it in today's music.
