Here's another weird tale for the Annals of Dead Marine Life Found In Unusual Places. A 33-foot-long dead whale was recently discovered in a marsh half a mile inland near the English village of Skeffling. Biologists suspect that this is a female Sei whale that became beached after being caught in a particularly high autumn equinox tide. Explained Kirsten Smith of the Yorkshire Wildlife Trust: With the high tide the whale probably got carried up on to the salt marsh, got pushed further in shore and then got stuck when the tide went out. The area where the whale was found is salt marsh, which is still connected to the sea. The salt marsh is one of several components of the Humber Estuary, and is further in than the mud flats and sand components. Sometimes whales come into the shallow water looking for food and get stuck.

This dead whale is but one of several to be found in England over the last month. Researchers believe that a change in sea currents is causing colder Arctic water to enter the North Sea, which in turn is bringing potentially stranded whales closer to the British shorelines.
