Mies van der Rohe - Less is More
part 5 of 7
BBC Documentary - Visions Of Space - 2003

..............................

Carr Chapel, aka the God box is one of less-well-known university buildings at IIT, that are worth a look. The Robert F. Carr Memorial Chapel was completed in 1952, and its the only church building designed by the great Mies van der Rohe.
Its made of load-bearing bricks, not Miess usual steel, and unique among Miess campus buildings, it has an exposed ceiling rather than dropped tile.
Known on campus as the God box, the interior of the chapel consists of but one room, with steelframed glass on the walls facing east and west. The space is as unadorned as a storage shed. No icons, no paintings, no Gothic ornament, no Bible stories evoked in colorful stained glass.

  • @dimas414 Dull, not dumb.

  • "there is no bad Mies, but my god theres a dumm Mies"

  • I like his ideas but I'm not sure i feel anything much for this Mies guy, he's no Loyd Wright now there's a man! I think the Palumbo Lord chap sold on his house after this, not so fond of it now then was he

  • That is the best line ever. You'll only understand it too if you go to IIT. "There isn't a bad Mies, but by God there is a dull Mies"

  • @patotas666 "When a wise man points the moon the fool looks at the finger"

  • @rcam2000 Meis? Mies van Der Rohe

  • for those that do not know Robert Hughes very few are more qualified at criticing either art or architecture and the respective histories of both genres.

  • @rcam2000 ive now seen your comments on two videos..

if you dont like them,.. why watch them

if you cant appraciate these why watch them?

why even post your opinion cose they're here for others to enjoy...

    you sir.... are an idiot

  • @patotas666

The layman with an ego large enough to convince himself he has the knowledge, inteligence and sensitivity to judge an established genius is quite a sad phenomenon.

Reminds me of a chicken staring at a computer.

  • @rcam2000

I disagree. As I hear him both critique and praise Mies's work He's simply expressing a personal point of view and I would suspect most would agree with most of what he has to share. it's also obvious to me that he has an eneormous amount of respect (and awe) for this brilliant and courageous architectural visionary. That he does not always understand Mies's thinking is simply the product of an educated but otherwise relatively average person attempting to comprehend genius.
