Open Gloving Technique

Open gloving: This technique is often used for situations where sterile hands are required to protect the patient, but donning a gown is not needed. Examples would be IV catheterization, urinary catheterization, cleaning feeding tube sites, and wound treatments. The outer surface of the gloves are not touched while donning the gloves with this technique, unless it is with a sterile gloved hand. Also, one will have to use the open glove technique if their glove becomes contaminated during a case.

STEPS:
1.) Open the sterile pack of gloves and drop them into the sterile field.

2.) Lift right glove by grasping the inside of the cuff with left hand.

3.) Slide right hand into glove without touching the gown (if wearing a gown) or the outside of the glove. Do not adjust glove or cuff until both gloves are on.

4.) Lift the left glove by sliding fingers of gloved hand in between the upturned cuff and outside surface of glove.

5.) With gloved fingers still under the cuff, slide the glove onto left hand and over the cuff of the gown.

6.) Now that both gloves are on, adjust the right glove by sliding fingers of left hand under the cuff that is still upturned and slide it over the cuff of the gown.
