  • can you feel my wood by touching your screen guys?

  • Reinux, the only need is a braile font map and thats it. They just have to map a different texture to letters, apply the font and blind people woula almost be able tow work with normal computers! I just wonder how much this kind of technology would cost...

  • now if they can get braille to work with this, we can have smartphones for blind people

  • I hear they're using this in their new Honeycomb tablet (the Thrive). I hope it works out, because we really need haptic feedback for our gadgets.

I've owned my iPad for almost a year now and I'm still not really used to that on-screen keyboard. The fact that it has zero haptic feedback means you need to actually look down at it to know where you're typing. This creates a slight lag and unease when compared to the click of a real keyboard.

  • Wow, really exciting! *fists clenched jumping up and down*

  • @Zuriki09 You are right, and if the sensation was simply a variable from 0-255 (assuming it is 8 bit) for "rough" or "smooth" for each "pixel," pretty much anyone can create apps using the SDK. Maybe the "pixels" are like on a screen, with more or less 3 "subpixels" so you can fool the hand to think it is different material.

  • @abckookooman Wouldn't it make more sense to just have the feedback channels affixed to a heightmap. So the brighter the "pixel" the more feedback to produce, and vice versa.

This would allow the freedom to create custom feedback "materials" and not some predefined set. It also makes more sense to do it this way, as it's not just material feedback you're giving, related to what is on the screen, so you might have Braille text overlay and then a "bump" for the next button (ebook reader example).

  • A haptic, textured touch screen??

  • @kirox777 Then again, I'm thankful it wasn't called Revolution. Honestly, it would've been a cool name at first but a few years down it's not that much of a revolution anymore

  • This is the way to go if they want to have a touch screen on the controller. With tactile feedback, you won't have to constantly look at your controller and so you'll be able to concentrate on your tv.
