It depends if you are religious or not. For instance, in Abrahamic religions animals are lesser than men and were created to support us, however, humans are the custodians of the world around us and not its destroyers/consumers.
If you are atheist, obviously you can formulate your own opinion on the matter. But at the end of the day, the real argument here is whether God is real or not and if he sent us a moralcode of conduct.
But this argument is too big for this page.

@shaamanplatinum I understand your point but just because they don't help one another doesn't mean they deserve less rights but there are areas were humans have higher emotionally/moral potential thus higher moral values. But at least all mammals deserve equal rights to be protected from physical pain & suffering.

Of course, animals should have more rights than they do today. However I must point out:
Human beings have some things that animals don't. For instance, charity, an animal will not do anything if it does not benefit it as an individual or as a species. Humans, on the other hand, will help people and animals they have no relation in any aspect to, for no reason.
