  • The last charecter pronounces Trương in Hán-Việt, so is not correct for this lady given name .

  • @tinmanpdx It is also pronounced as Trang as an âm khác....It is the Nôm pronunciation. Although some writers count it as a Hán-Việt variant used in names. "trang" there in her name means "page" thus the ideographically correct character is the one for "trương"

  • Aren't those four characters Chinese ? I think those are not Chữ Nôm . Nguyễn Thị Thu Trang are the Sino-Việt, or Hán-Việt pronunciations of those four Chinese characters .

  • @tinmanpdx Yes technically they are not Chu Nom. This is a person's name so they are Chu Han....In this case the lady's name are purely Han Viet

  • ...for civil records, and names are most likely not chữ Nôm . Chữ Nôm are for poems, and folk literatures.

  • @XuBianLi ! You are right only when trang as an chữ Nôm "âm khác" (alternate pronunciation) with the meaning "page". BUT ... May I ask, did her parents tell you her name means "page" ? There are at least six characters pronounced trang . The character 妝 (to put on make-up) or 莊 (with the meaning of solemn as in nghiêm-trang) are more likely a Vietnamese female name. Before we adopted Latinized script, chữ Hán with Hán-Việt pronunciation is the official written script for civil records

  • phrases, and a poem from Latinized to Chữ Nôm, in Chữ Nôm forum on Viện-Việt-Học webpage. What software do you use to display characters stroke by stroke like that ? BTW ! What are the three characters for XuBianLi ?

  • @XuBianLi Greetings ! Thanks for replying ! Yes ! The lady's name are purely Latinized Hán-Việt like most of Vietnamese last, and first name. There are few ladies's names that you can write in Chữ Nôm, for they they are purely Việt, like : Tấm, Cám, Đẹp, Gái, Thắm, Thơm, Lài, Bông ...

May I ask are you Chinese ? If yes, learning Chữ Nôm must be easier for you because you already know Chinese characters, that were used in forming Chữ Nôm. I am learning Chữ Nôm, I did transcribe some phrases, ...

  • woa thank you sooo much for the vid!!
