My grandma had one of these build a web across her front door. She started using the back because she was too afraid but didn't want to hurt it. xD

@ncrider2000 No, this is a female of Argiope Aurantia, very common in north America, not dangerous for us.

@Michellemybelle70 This is a female of Argiope Aurantia, not poisonous for humans. This class of spiders are not aggressive, but rarely can bite, if repeatedly harassed. You can handle they without great difficultys.

you do realize that thats a male black widow spider right?
-
oh and yes, they get pretty big, about the size of an adults hand

these used to be all over the place in texas, until people started building houses, after that, i have yet to see another in person, and thats been a good... 9 or 8 years... freakin construction guys, i really liked watching the spiders to!

@Jethro100 Thats cool you like them I dont care that you do. But small things that I can easily get hurt by is just scary to me. I don't have the same respect for them as I do other things. I don't care when they came. They have pretty colors, but they are just not welcome near me. I'm sure it doesn't want me around it either so feeling is mutual.

Had one of those in our garage back at our old house! Scared the shit out of us!

@VioletMoonFire They were here before you, you should respect all animals or insects, Im scared to death of spiders, but I still like them no matter what. BTW! I was bitten as a child and have a scar but I still like them.
These are great spiders to watch, i myself hate spiders not from ignorance but sheer unreasonable fear and respect for the damn things. These spiders construct a very intricate and amazing web. if you like wildlife and have a spot with some flowers watch for these little guys and in the evenings you can really watch them work away. Toss in a grasshopper and see what happens. Not cruel, just helpin the spider out. (saves your plants too!) like my frickin pepper plants. Bastard grasshoppers.

I'd rather have a harmless garden spider than a beatle eating my pants
