The Poet: Syed Waris Shah سیّد وارث شاہ was born in the first quarter of the eighteenth century in Jandiala Sher Khan جنڈیالہ شیر خان, Sheikhupura شیخوپورہ, Punjab پنجاب (Mughal India, now Pakistan). His fathers name was Gulsher Khan گلشیر خان . His parents are believed to have passed away when he was very young. Waris Shah himself claimed to be a disciple of Pir Makhdoom پیر مخدوم of Kasur قسور. It is thought that he completed his education at Pir Makhdooms shrine, following which he moved to Malka Hansملکہ ہانس . He resided in a small room, next to a local mosque. There he passed away in c. 1798.

His Legacy: His poetry has a very respected position in the Punjabi Literature (both in Pakistan and India). It contains a treasure of phrases, sayings, and idioms of the Punjabi language. His most popular work is Heer ہیر (or Heer Waris Shah), a story of love between Heer and Ranjha رانجھا . Other writers have also written Heer, but his work is considered the best. He finished Heer in 1766, and it is believed to be a true story which took place in the 16th Century CE. His Mausoleum today is a place of pilgrimage for many.

Malka Hans today is a small town today just South of Okara اوکاڑہ in District Pakpattan پاک پتن, Punjab, Pakistan. Pakpattan itself has the mausoleum of Baba Fariduddin Ganjshakarبابا فرید الدین گنج شکر , a respected Sufi, and one of the 15 Sikh Bhagats, whose works are included in the Guru Granth Sahib. Khawaja Nizamuddin Auliya خواجہ نظام الدین اولیا was his disciple (murid).

Waris Shahs hujra حجرہ (a small room) and the adjacent mosque still exist.

The Singar: Muhammad Iqbal Bahu محمد اقبال باہو has been singing on Radio and TV in Pakistan for more than 30 years now. He initially gained popularity by singing Sufi صوفی poetry of Sultan Bahu سلطان باہو . Saif-ul Malook and Heer Waris Shah sung by him is also very popular.
