Summer vacation has just begun for most high school graduates. But it's already over for those heading to the Merchant Marine Academy in Kings Point. New recruits reported for duty today and it was anything but a vacation as Rob Hahn reports.

this is so gay. i thought Maritime was a joke, this puts it to shame. these kids are out of shape, they wear berets, their voices crack when they yell... what a waste of federal spending. and you'd think people that were halfway intelligent or had some sort of reputation to uphold, like @LINewsTonight would know that people in the merchant marine are called merchant mariners. not merchant marines.

Broke Dick wannabes. Just enlist and go to infantry school. Kings pointers are a waste of fucking money. Out of the ones I sailed with, less than 10% are worth their salt. Just be fucking civilians when you get out there. If you wanna be a commando, not the fucking merchant marine. Roger!?! Tracking !?! Remember your brothers who died in combat while serving in the fucking military, and respect the civilians doing their fucking part!

all other federal academy say they are all that but in reallity none of them have hand on experience like the merchant marine academy. Naval and coast guard say they know everything but only the USMMA goes to sea for a year and plebes here have it much worse than west point and annapolis since we have no liberty like you guys and if you think this place is a joke come here but only 50 % graduate due to academics

If you're trying to argue that the USMMA is stressful and physically-taxing, especially in comparison to other federal service academies (or enlisted basic training, for that matter), then you're doing a poor job. Are you intimidated by those superior cadets ordering others around? If so, you wouldn't last a day in any other formal military training. The USMMA isn't exactly "prestigious", but I respect these cadets regardless for wanting to serve their country.
