Presentation by Prof. Aaron Lanterman, given as part of the IEEE Georgia Tech Student Branch Faculty Presentation series. Part 2 of 7.
The iPhone in your pocket is more powerful than the Cray-1 used to create the original Tron. Exponential growth curves are exponential at every point; the singularity is already here, but it's always been here. But 2005 may be the date that historians will look back to as the point that technology and our ability to use it for education started far outstripping the ability of traditional universities to keep up. Engineers take principles discovered by scientists and mathematicians, and use it to create new technology, which other engineers use to create new layers of technology.
(Correction: I said the Cray ran at 8 MHz. I misspoke; I meant to say 80 Hz.)
A Cray wasn't used to create the animations in Tron. The actual computer used was a modified PDP-10 called the Super Foonly F-1.
