4th and final part in my 'fixing faulty Ebay junk' series where I document my attempt at fixing a RROD Xbox 360. In this update I breifly explain some of the options available for fixing the RROD and give my opinion on the subject. I completely rebuild the console and start the process of stress testing before finally reselling.

Microsoft's cooling system in the original 360 was really badly designed and is very inefficient. The fan shroud mod is a simple way to help direct and increase airflow over the GPU heatsink. I can't find the original tutorial by the guy who originally came up with the idea but doing a quick google search I found this pretty good one...

It's not going to undo Microsoft's design flaws but it will help :P

This is the final part to the 360 series but I have more consoles on the way. Next up I have a Nintendo DS which is refusing to play games. I hope to do more of these videos over the coming weeks.

Thanks for watching!

  • Cardboard over the heat sink?

  • @keearun Yes, Microsoft's air cooling design for the original 360 is very inefficient. The fan shroud mod helps direct and increase airflow over the heatsinks. It has been tested and proven to significantly lower temps.

  • is it suppose to be that loud?

  • @shadowtsunami Surprisingly yes. It's a release console and they were noisy as hell. The fans are running at normal speed and the game is being read from the dvd drive + the power brick has built in fan and that's sitting just out of shot to the right. In it's defence though the microphone makes it sounds a lot worse than it is in real life. But yes it is noisy as hell and yes that was what Microsoft deemed to be acceptable. lol.

  • Do you think having the machine in a certain position (like horizontal or vertical) bares any responsiblity for the solder to fail?

  • @LarryBundyJr People say horizontal is more efficient and it probably is (very slightly). But to be honest the first version of 360 is so riddled with critical design flaws that it doesn't matter :P .

  • needs to be reballed. you did a minor reflow. which like you said wont last along time. if you reballed it would be basically brand new :P

  • Very nice, like adding the flat cardboard over the GPU heatsink...may do that on mine :)

  • 99% of the time it's going to be the GPU that fails on you. Oddly the CPU is one of the most reliable components in the 360, although it doesn't have much competition...
