The first recordings in the Georgian Republic
Folk and liturgical Choir of Tbilisi, Mikheil Kavsadze, director. recorded 1914 (Gramophone C3-14680, matrix #5481ae; 03:06)
16. Chona

Chona is an Easter song, but not part of any liturgy. Rather, it is sung as part of a folk tradition. The singers gather in the village at night, circle through the village, and walk around the church, singing Chona and giving people eggs dyed red with madder roots.

Choir of Tbilisi

Mikheil Kavsadze (1880-1961), director

Tracks 15-16

Mikheil Kavsadze was born in the village of Khovle, in the region of Kaspi, He learned folk songs from his father, Longinoz Kavsadze, and from his uncle Sandro. Mikheil formed his first choir in 1897. By 1905, he had moved to Tbilisi, where he formed a new choir. In 1911, Mikheil was handed the direction

of Sandro Kavsadze's choir, which he continued to lead for many years, performing frequently in concert, and recording several gramophone discs. Mikheil was a master of Kartli-Kakhetian song, and worked diligently to popularize and preserve this folklore, often travelling to villages to revive lost songs from old village singers. He may be considered one of Georgia's first ethnomusicologists. Unfortunately, no record survives of who the singers in his choir were. Mikheil Kavsadze died in 1961.
