Tijuana Police Harassing Citizen on the Street, Zona Norte

A guy is playing a pinball machine down in a store. TJ cops slow down, look at him, go, then come back. They get out and pull him to the street, check his paperwork and frisk him, then cuff him. Did he not have the proper ID paperwork, did he have drugs? Unknown, but this is a common sight: the TJ cops just scoop up men left and right, probably to generate revenues in fines. It may be possible the guy didn';t have 200-300 pesos on him to keep the cops from arresting him. We must keep in mind that therfe are no civil rights in Tijuana (and Mexico) -- you can be frisked, detained, arrested without probably cause, without the rights U.S. citisens enjoy under the 2nd, Fifth, and Sixth Amendments. Not having proper ID on you can get you arrested, holding someone else's ID can get you arrested, and not having any ID at all can get you arrested. Once processed in jail, you have to come up with money to get out, money that goes right into the crooked cops' pockets.

If I am a 60 year old white male would I be harassed by Tijuana Police?, I would look like a gringo tourist, just wondering as have wanted to visit TJ but been leary because of stories I hear about police there?

@frienda60 They might harass you depending on the time of day/night and if you look like you have money -- if you look like you have money, yes they will if they can, to get all or some of it. well.

If you get threatened by the TJ cops, on foot or in a car, and you have done nothing wrong, best thing to do is not to give in to their intimidation. They may threaten to take you to the station for booking and if they have nothing on you, just say, "Go ahead."

Well, I had a nice visit to Tijuana, and i found the city to be very safe...it seems all the business owners are aware that Americans are afraid to visit, I felt like all the restaurants, taxis, etc...treated me like a King!...I Recommend visiting Mexico, I will try to visit Cancun early next year

Well, I am getting ready to drive to San Diego, then will walk across to Tijuana, i will just go during daylight hours then return to USA...hopefully, i will be posting here within a couple days reporting I had a safe peaceful visit to TJ...Cheers! in advance(a couple Margaritas!)

@frienda60 Last time I was there was 2006 and I am a white male as well. I grew up in Southern CA it was like a rite of passage going down there. Sure at the time we were always a bit leary going down there but the reality is... once you cross that border you are pretty much on your own. I can't even imagine how things are down there now. I have read that crime is kept confined to certain areas and is more low profile than 1-3 years ago. However, it's really not worth it in my opinion.....

Tourists come to tijuana mexico, what they say on TV. a lie, well here we invite you to av. revolution here in Tijuana, the criminals are attacking each other. not attack tourists or innocent, only if there is cross-fire and a bullet flies out against you, but do not have anything against people from other countries

The money from fines paid go directly to the city........not the cops......, politicians make the laws, officers enforce them....The officers here for unknown reasons take into custody this person, i dont have full info so i DOnt judge...I do observe the lack of Proper INTERVIEW positioning,and poor frisking, the COVERING officer lets a man walk in between them and is not covering nothing.......Not all TJ cops are like these ones......ENjoy TJ, Be Safe....
