great tutorial! So you do find that when layering drums it is better to eq them together as one instead of eqing them individually?

@bushofghosts1 I do it both ways, depending on the original samples being used. In this, the two kick samples complemented each other nicely, for instance, so it sounded better to just EQ and compress them together. If I had made the beat in Pro Tools, I'd be more likely to shape each sample individually.

forgive my ignorance but which program is this using? is it free? if not, are there other free beat/sound creators online anywhere?

@quazimododry This was done using Reason. There are some free or inexpensive shareware DAWs out there although I've not used them so others might be better able to comment. I think Reaper is supposed to be good. There are tonnes of free plugins available for making beats.
