We have an electoral collage. We vote for who is in the electoral collage and that person in return votes for the President. We don't vote for the Supreme Court. That is the only non-democratic part of our society.
A direct democracy is not the only form of a democracy. You have consensus democracies like Mexico and Switzerland, and you also other types of democracies as well.

The only way we can have a non-democratic system is if there is no voting taken place.
Democracy is synonymous with voting. We decide who runs our government by voting.
Federalism divides who runs our government by administrative smaller units, which we call states (should be called provinces though).
Each State's government is decided by voting and the legislature of the country is decided by voting.
The Presidency is decided by indirect voting and the Supreme Court is an Aristocracy.

A republic is a democracy, a type of democracy. Democracy means people rule, but there are different ways this can be done.
