Capt. Jon Ross, EWO Project Nancy Rae, Shemya 1964. Arrived day after major aftershock at Elmendorf (earthquake destroyed Fairbanks). Experienced the Kamchatka Peninsula earthquake with 95ft tidal wave that washed up incredible WWII artifacts. Our 135 bounced in Hangar 2 like a rubber ball. Commander was Lt.Col Woda. Ops Officer was Maj. Ollie Johnson. Served as maintenance/housing officer. We also flew missions out of Hickam AB, HI. Served as detachment commander during refit in Texas.

I flew COBRA BALL for many years, the first of my assignments in the A/C was at Eielson/Shemya.
krhawes, I'd be interested in knowing who your grandfather was, especially if he was part of the 6th Strat Wing between 1986-1989 when I was there.
The photo that they uncovered and held up was difficult to make out, but I believe it was a fairly familiar photo of RIVET AMBER which was lost over the Bering Sea in 1969.
I still have my 6th Strat Wing patch...wish I could find a new one.

I served from 1983 to 1985 in the 6CAMS as an 32550
Cool! I can only imagine the excitement of seeing the jet bounce like that. I don't much care for earthquakes and hurricanes, but that's a rough part of the world for quakes.
If you have any pics to share, send them to King.
