The Tyrrell P34 (Project 34), otherwise affectionately known as the 'six-wheeler,' was a Formula One race car designed by Derek Gardner, Tyrrell's chief designer.
The car used four specially manufactured 10-inch-diameter (250 mm) wheels and tyres at the front, with two ordinary-sized wheels at the back.
Contrary to popular belief, the idea of the smaller front tyres was not to have a smaller 'frontal area' to reduce drag, as the frontal area was still determined by the width of the standard-sized rear slicks.
In fact, the six-wheel design reduced the lift caused by two larger front wheels, improving frontal downforce, increased the total contact patch of the front tyres and created a greater swept area for the brake discs.
Here it takes on the Goodwood sprint course at full throttle, driven by Martin Stretton.

  • I was stood at Molcombe corner when he got it really sideways and the whole crowd cheered when he got back on it straight away.

  • @GDH1981 - Yeah, and if you can hit your 'pause' button somewhere in the 30th second you can see just how crossed up he was - and amazingly it never even put him off his stride for a moment.

  • F1 should be encouraging innovation, side skirts, active suspension, ground effect, moveable wings,V6 to V12, whatever,F1 is boring because all the big teams win no matter what because they can afford to develop most within the confines the FIA set.If F1 allowed mad designers to run the show small teams would stand a chance because they could develop new ideas that might give them an advantage eg Lotus this year with their brake activated suspension being banned has harmed a small team

  • @GDH1981 when was it? 1990's?

  • Along with the Ferrari tipo v12s that roared the 90's, the cosworth dfv which rumbled the 70's is unbelievably fantastic. Much better than the v10s and the v8s which have ruined the 00s/10s. Like this if you agree! :)

  • @AcceleracerWylde well, the drivers can if they want to. looks great. not that quick, though.

  • cute front tires, huge back tires.......LOVE IT :)

  • brilliant to think practically all late 70's formula 1's sounded this fantastic, ford DFV ftw!

  • These sound much better than today's F1 cars IMO

  • Simply friggin awesome!

  • Was this car manageable? How was its handling?

I looks so unstable to me.

  • Ha ha ha ha ha!!! Understeer?!?! Understeer you say?!? What is this ficticious thing called understeer you speak of?? Ha ha ha ha h*...... (Woah! Hooo shit! Better watch those rear tires though. Yikes!)
