For a fish that is sold as a beginner fish they die easily. Neons are a difficult fish to keep. Water quality is less important than constant temp. Buy the best heater you can find and keep it between 72-76 F for this fish. 78-80 F (common community temp) is too high for them.

I set my filter up so it's blows out water and drops in inti the water so when the food gets hit by the running water it floats down and the my tetras eat them. Make sure your flakes are really crunched up.
