The Meaning of "Austerity"

..."Austerity" is one of those Orwellian terms that has been injected into our political discourse precisely because it is a nice-sounding word for a very painful reality. "Austerity" implies discipline, self-restraint, even nobility. "Austerity" is prudent. "Austerity" is modest. "Austerity" is a virtue. It is an end in itself.

If the IMF or the European Central Bank come to the people of a collapsing European nation and tell them to sacrifice their pensions and their savings and their very standard of living all for a debt that their government has fraudulently racked up in their name, no one would go for it, and rightly so.

But tell those same people that they need to implement "austerity measures" in order to "get back on their feet" economically, and many will be willing to live in the harshest of conditions, content to put up with the dismantling of their nation itself in the vain hope that by giving more power to the international financial institutions they can somehow avoid economic collapse...

@munkyusm Ask the Russians or French who were elite or noble during their revolts ... this is the hard reality. The sad part is people who have done wrong and known to do wrong will have the label of elite.

You might not like it, but this is reality ... how could you avoid it if the worst thing happened? Live and treat others well regaurdless of your wealth.

How about we quit getting mad at people for buying goods and selling goods? It's pretty fucking moronic. Get mad at a government that clearly created a constitution that has done little to protect itself from corruption. The state is the prob, not people voluntarily trading with each other.

@ben5017 I just don't like the "elite" argument that people use. It is the state. Name one state in the past 10,000 years that didn't have a 1% ruling over the others and moving it in the way it thought most glorified the state. Yes, you can call the 1% the elite, but what you're missing is the main point - the state is the power. If there were no state, there would be no "elite".

@munkyusm These elites are just blindly pushing our nation into something equal to the Russian or French revolutions ... they have generally not starved the people from food, but the starvation of Freedoms of everything else.

This Govt has controlled the people and fed them as the Chickens in a slaughter house ... we feed you, but we only allow you the life in the confines of our control.

For the elites ... enjoy your futures when yours are taken ... would'nt honesty have been better?
