HBO held a contest asking New Yorkers to submit interesting true stories that happened on the subways. The winning stories were then adapted for the film. "Sax, Cantor, Riff" was written and directed by Julie Dash, Featuring Taral Hicks (singer), Kenny Garrett (saxaphone), Dan Rous (Cantor) and Sam Rockwell. Produced by Jonathan Demme and Rosie Perez.

This is an amazing scene. Kenny Garrett is one of my favorite musicians ever, and the interplay with Taral Hicks and Dan Rous in this is just gorgeous.

@poponlychild I agree. I saw it back then and admit, I had never heard this song before. My mom told me that it was originally done by Mahalia Jackson and was in Imitation of Life...loved it ever since. But this version will always be very special to me. She has an amazing voice.
