Extreme Commuter Julia Hecker of Manhattan rides more than 200 blocks
to and from her nursing job at Mt. Sinai Hospital. She takes the bike over the
subway any time of day, and in any kind of weather. amNewYork's Justin
Rocket Silverman reports.

  • I need to find me a cycling girl like Julia, hehe

  • I'm sorry to say that Julia's days are numbered unless she adopts safer biking practices. Lane splitting, running reds, no helmet, passing on left, no lights, no reflectors, traveling in danger zone of opening car doors, not signaling. There's a way to bike in safely in Manhattan and this is not it.

  • Hardly extreme, my dad rode year 'round into his mid 60's, in a city that has much longer, colder and snowier winters than New York.

Admirable yes, but if senior citizens can do it in a harsher environment, it's certainly not extreme for someone in thier twenties

  • I love her. She's definitely sweet and pretty. But as I bike commuter myself, I long for the day when this is a non-story, let along describing it as extreme.

  • i wish my girl would be abit more enthusiastic about riding a bike.. if only shed see more women do it im sure shed see the logic behind it... cycling saves money helps you get in shape and its a fun activity to do with your bf so to all women out there please RIDE A BIKE!!! or skate etc or both

  • Amazing all the fear mongering from people saying "wear a helmet".

I also love the claims of "a helmet saved me". The average commuter DOES NOT need to wear a plastic bucket on their head.

I've fallen off many times and haven't even come close to hitting my head. I have however come close to smacking my head on the pavement when I slipped on ice while walking in the winter...Helmets for pedestrians perhaps? Maybe motorists as well. Hell everyone should wear one at all times maybe.

  • Good on her! I wouldn't call it extreme commuting though, only commuting, and far more should be doing the same.

  • @richgilb no i didnt get killed, but i allmost got nocked over once..

  • @Axbent Wait, you killed a guy on a bike? Or did you get killied?

  • Julia Hecker, you're brave woman.cheer up! and happy commuting.

  • Uh, why in heavens is she not wearing a helmet????? That's irresponsible and stupid.

  • Extreme commuter? Extreme muppet - RLJ without even looking!! Top stuff, godd job she knows some form of First Aid as she'll need it pretty soon judging by that riding!
