I don´t know the answer.

My black orandas were black till their died and they didn´t eat special things.

I think that the origen (genetic), water´s quality, and feed are the main for the colour.

What color was your black oranda when he (?) was young? I have two 2" "black" oranda and the female was getting dark but after spawning she has since become a more chocolatey color and the ridge of her back is a soft grey, the male is much darker in color but his cheeks have turned an orange chocolate color, their scales are speckled black. Is this something you have seen with your oranda?
