Martinu - Sonata for Flute and Piano 1st Mvt.
Isaac Barry - Piano, Stephen Bonney - Flute
In February 1945 Slovakia was liberated and bit by bit German forces were being driven out of that part of Europe. Martinu started having thoughts of returning home from his enforced exile in the States. News was not always good - some relatives were alive - some and friends too - not. He decided to take a holiday in Cape Cod while he mulled over the whole situation. While there he wrote this very genial (surprisingly - but then Martinu had alreay written his War/Angst pieces and maybe now was the time to think positively of the future) sonata. In the last mvt, he seems to have been taken up by the song of the Whipoorwil - I don't know if they are native to Cape Cod - but if you google "Song of the Whipoorwil" you should get an example of it which really does seem to sound like that obsessive figuration Martinu repeats throughout the movement right up to the Flute's last notes.
I'm absolutely in love with this Sonata and cannot wait to perform it someday.

Well done you for being so acquainted with the piece! At the risk of revealing too much information and flying recriminations!! - I think I can truly say I was doing my very best to follow in a tricky section that the flute player had knocked off balance slightly with the addition of an extra note that upset the rhythm consequently. But not being a performer I guess you wouldn't understand things like that!
