Robert Hughes: The Business of Art. Damien Hirst is all hype

At Sothebys an anonymous bidder bought a bull in a tank of formaldehyde for £10.3million. The worlds most expensive cut of beef was cooked up, inevitably, by the artist Damien Hirst, whose Beautiful Inside My Head Forever sale of 223 new works fetched £111.5million, a record for an auction dedicated to one artist.
The illustrious Australian art critic Robert Hughes, however, isnt buying the hype.

Damien Hirst is rubbish. If someone wants to throw away millions of dollars for garbage that they hope one day will sold to someone dumber than themselves for millions more then they have hope because as P.T. Barnum stated, 'there is a sucker born every day'.

Excuse me he is not articulate at all. He generalizes, does not offer

any specific examples to support his floundering blather, gives no

indication that he even understands the questions he's being asked!

He is an example of someone so rich he doesn't have to think,

or justify himself, never did. It's clear

he never had to develop any intellectual capacity whatsoever,

probably asks his chauffeur what he should say or just parrots his daddy.

@proust2020 That is a very narrow pessimistic view of the art world. In fact most of the art is funded by not the 1% but the bourgeois and people who are still interested in the "nobler" causes of art. RP only wants to see that society and the art world in decline and takes advantage of the easy work that are representative of the world that he wants to see. There are lots of other artist that defies the "norm."

@mrsJimmyStewart If you read RH writing, you will where is perspective lies. He is in fact I think the best critic and writers of art ever lived. You actually understand very clearly what he is saying instead of bogus some lucid philosophical bs that a lot of other pompous asses talk about because they actually in fact have nothing really clear to say.

Damien Hirst is not an artist. He doesnt produce anything..other people do his work...if anything they deserve more credit for his work than him.

It's so sad how millions of artists around the world produce quality work, practise everyday,struggle and dont get any recognition while this guy doesnt do anything and gets everything...t
