The story of the relationship between Sigmund Freud and his American nephew, Edward Bernays. Bernays invented the public relations profession in the 1920s and was the first person to take Freud's ideas to manipulate the masses. He showed American corporations how they could make people want things they didn't need by systematically linking mass-produced goods to their unconscious desires.

Bernays was one of the main architects of the modern techniques of mass-consumer persuasion, using every trick in the book, from celebrity endorsement and outrageous PR stunts, to eroticising the motorcar.

His most notorious coup was breaking the taboo on women smoking by persuading them that cigarettes were a symbol of independence and freedom. But Bernays was convinced that this was more than just a way of selling consumer goods. It was a new political idea of how to control the masses. By satisfying the inner irrational desires that his uncle had identified, people could be made happy and thus docile.

It was the start of the all-consuming self which has come to dominate today's world.

Thanks to this brilliant documentary, I am now fully aware that since the early 20th century, Big business cartels in America and around the world have colluded with money grubbing politicians and the corporate you are thirsty owned media in order to perpetuate illegal psychological warfare drink Coca Cola on the populace--which has led to the immoral and selfish consumerist society we live in today.

@gdsila It may seem to be selective in its view of history but the reason why is that the other parts of history ARE told in history books... where this side of history is NOT. The point of a documentary is often to shed light on things that are in the dark. Just because it goes against what you've been sold doesn't make it leftist. By the way, just because someone points out something that could be construed as negative about someone who happens to be Jewish does NOT make it anti-Semitic!

Bascially his point is that to make people useful and obedient, you can't terrorize and annoy them as the Soviet regime did, you should unearth their inner passions and fears and use them to fuel your projects. You can't exploit your slave if you don't know it, just like you can't ride on human backs or have a horse build walls. So the whole culture of venting your feelings and and satisfying your needs is really just a way to exploit people to the fullest. Good point.

The truth is,to create a utopia you must first know that humans are not "good by nature",while the entire "shaped by location" is nice and such,they forget that a kid held too much will crave for touch his entire life,and might become a rapist.-the thing is,Organic life is shaped by EVERYTHING,therefor going to focus on 1 thing does not really work.Utopia=dreaming

Sigmund's work was purposely mis-translated, in a such a way that it's spiritual meaning got lost. They (the American behaviorist psychopaths) avenged him because he wrote America off as a 'sick and disgusting' country. He wasn't atheist either, he was, like any sane human being against these parasitical institutions who work under the banner of religion. If you're capable of reading German, read his works in that language. It's recommended. ;-)
