Please visit my catch record on http://www.fishfanatic.net/view_all_catch_records.

Truly a piece of HEAVEN ON EARTH!! The Kashmir Valley snuggled away within the majestic Himalaya Mountains I consider myself extremely fortunate to have been able to visit this area and even more fortunate to have fished these crystal clear glacier rivers.

My guides name was Wali and he has lived in this area his whole life, as has his parents and his parents, parents, in fact he says that his family has been there for more than 100 generations. Due to the remoteness of this location my good guide and now a good friend, Wali doesn't own a fishing rod and has been fishing these waters his whole life with a hand line since he was a lad.

Considering this and the fact that wild brook, brown and rainbow trout inhabit these beautiful waters - a Hand Line! I was amazed and shocked to say the least. Nevertheless I was indeed out done by my friend Wali at the end of the day, even with 10 years flyfishing experience and with all my expensive and fancy equipment.

Should one every wish to venture out to extreme locations to catch truly wild trout in remote locations this is for you and please let me know how you do by posting a reply.

* Wali is based at the "Himalaya House" near Phalgam in Kashmir/Jammu Province.

  • Hi there, I'm off to Gulmarg in a couple of weeks and hear the snow's not so great so might want to catch a couple of trout if I can, can you fill me in on some details I might need? Do I need a permit and do I have to only use flys etc? I have a telescopic spinning rod but nothing major, could you let me know what the deal is?.

Thanks for any help you can give

  • @superdonyoungy:

basic regulations are: Brown trout fishing is confined mainly to the streams of Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh in the northwestern Himalayas. As per fishing regulations, `dry and wet' fly spinning, artificial and natural worms, etc. are the allowed baits for brown trout fishing. The artificial spinning bait, however, has been banned in Kashmir waters since 1970

  • he lookis like a mime;)

  • Yes you are correct only artificial flies are permitted in Kashmir, hence I was indeed fly fishing. However the locals there don't seem to follow these rules...I suppose they have been fishing like this for generations. Also no need for such abusive language, it just makes you look no better than the less knowledgeable locals. If you really still feel so strongly about it then go out there and educating them, this will have a much more positive outcome than calling other people stupid names.
