Confucius was commonly known as the teacher of a thousand generations... but even he must have found it hard to imagine the complex education problems faced by today's teachers, or "Gardeners", as we liked to call them.
In our current climate, a teacher coming out of the closet could be very valuable in providing the support and understanding for students who are confused about their own sexual orientation, or that of their friends. But in many ways it is harder and more complicated for a teacher to be open about his homosexuality, due to the nature of his/her work and the community he/she exists in... it will require great courage, and a significant shift in the conservative, and often discriminatory views of mainstream society.
In our next episode we are pleased to have Teacher Xiao An with us. A wonderfully expressive and eloquent person, his confidence and a lovely, cultured, "teacherly" style of speaking made for a highly enjoyable and rich interview with him as he shares his views and stories as a gay Teacher.
In this episode we have also invited 2 foreign friends teaching in China to share their personal experiences as gay teachers in this community.
