At the July 6, 2010, Westerville Ohio City Council Meeting, residents were given the opportunity to share their opinions on Westerville Electric obtaining a $4.3 Million dollar grant from the federal stimulus money to install electric smart meters on homes in Westerville. Many residents attended this meeting, most sharing their opposition to this plan.

Many residents, including this one, had similar concerns (paraphrase)

"Electric smart meters are an intrusion into my home. I will not let you into my home to control my utilities no matter what technology you come up with. Concerned about future costs to operate smart meters which will not be covered by stimulus money, therefore, means higher costs for the resident/consumer to bear. The main way people are supposed to save money on their utilities is because they will be "encouraged" to cut back on their electric usage during peak times or they will get charged a lot more to use electricity during the peak times. The threat of higher utility rates for those who don't comply by opting to letting the electric company control their thermostat, is not really freedom to choose, it's coercive.

This is all part of President Barack Obama's Cap and Trade plan as he has said "Under his Cap and Trade Plan -- electricity rates would necessarily sky rocket."
