Is yours the SE version?

@sdsounds1 It was not the SE version ,is the original machine, no mods.Whirring sounds...Hmmm... Capacitors in the circuit focusing head?

I believe that"whirring" sound is the sound of the laser moving back and forth finding the TOC and the sound of the motor spinning up. My Magnavox does the same thing.
