I guess it's because stand-up has always been expected to be original material instead of just covering someone else's joke. I mean, musicians get famous because they have an ability to create their own songs, and it'd be weird if a stand-up comedian got famous only telling someone else's jokes. I actually don't think I know enough about stand-up to answer this.
Really interesting. I never thought of it like that. I think it is easier for people to realise that when a band is doing a cover it is not their song vs. when a comedian tells a joke people haven’t memorised the comedians repertoire to notice when anything is copied.
I think musicians get reimbursed when other people play their songs and comedians don't get reimbursed when other people use their jokes. Having said that, I would love a George Carlin tribute comedian.
with comedy, presentation is vital but is often overlooked. if ur a great comedian, it just seems natural. thats why i think it is weighted more on the MATERIAL in comedy
I agree with everything you said about the effort that goes into songs and jokes, however I think that covering a song is different from telling someone else's joke because you have to put effort into putting your own spin on the song and learning how to play it and stuff. Also covering a song is almost like free advertising. But like if you tell someone's joke you're not going to be like "Oh by the way I got this joke from this person" because it just seems awkward, you know?

Have you seen The Aristocrats? There are classic jokes that can be passed around.
