Social Security: The Easy Fix

Most of us can grasp the concept of helping out the ones who came before us as they reach retirement, because, of course, the day will come when we are the retirees. This is the simple logic behind our Social Security system. The ones working today support the retirees who did the same for their elders, and so on. It doesn't take much to see through the people who spend all their time trashing this great American idea . You just need to be willing to look honestly.

Social security is by definition socialism. People should save and invest for their retirement. If they don't, tough shit.

@pretorious700 - So you're ok with losing all the SS money that's been taken out of your paycheck for your entire working life? How about the socialization of all the risk and privatization of all the profit on Wall Street, or the socialization of the cost of tax breaks for the super-rich? Or, as I also mentioned, the fact that most understand that SS should be counted on as the only source of retirement income and have planned accordingly? The "tough shit" stance is nonsensical politics.

Completely agreed. Most of the folks who talk about either doing away with or privatizing SS have no idea what it's like to live day to day like most of us, or better yet, they have no idea what it's like to never be able to find gainful employment no thanks to a disability I was born with. They are the clueless FYIGM generation.
