Looks to me it was a turbocharger fire. GE turbos are prone to catching on fire. For those who are still whining about bringing the F40s back, if they were to be brought back, they would have to comply with the EPA Tier 2 emissions standard like every other locomotive out there. Besides, they use a lot more fuel and are noisy. The reason these break down all time is that Amtrak can't afford to do proper maintainence on them therefore break downs will continue until they receive proper funds.

hey, EMD is NO LONGER MAKING PASSENGER LOCOMOTIVES, THE F40PH IS NOT COMING BACK. EITHER (A) DEAL WITH THE GE PRODUCT, OR (B) CALL MOTIVE POWER AND SEE WHAT THEY CAN DO FOR YA. IT'S OVER GUYS, NO MORE EMD, NO MORE F40, GE MAKES A GOOD PRODUCT, MOTIVE POWER WONT PRODUCE ANYTHING FOR AMTRAK... GE T OVER IT!!!
