Rockin' in Rhythm Royal Society Orch. 1990
Don Neely and the ten piece Royal Society Jazz Orchestra, from San Francisco, are renowned for authentically capturing the exciting sound of Big Band Swing, Hot Syncopated Jazz, Blues, and music of the Cotton Club. Innovators such as Duke Ellington, Benny Goodman, Paul Whiteman, Count Basie, Fletcher Henderson, Bix Biederbecke, and Louis Armstrong are among the RSJO's inspirations. But you will discover immediately upon seeing them live or listening to their recordings, that the Royal Society Jazz Orchestra has an intriguing personality and style of its own
Styles change over time. This group is playing Rockin' in Rhythm in the correct style for the period, which was before the swing era. Go to jazz-on-line (D O T )com (Slash) Duke_Ellington (D O T ) htm to hear how the musicians who made it a hit record played it in 1931.

The problem with "Jazz experts" is that they know so little about what they claim to know so much about. Duke without the swing? Duke was swingin like this in 1928-30 and played this song just like this...until Jazz became more as swing as we know it in the 30s-40s.
Break out your old 78s and do some research before opening your mouths.

To IOLTA ... bands did play like this in the 1920's ... check out Vince Giordano and his Nighthawks on YouTube and others ... but first you should read what's written under "more info" above in the upper right hand corner concerning this band ... Don Neely and the ten piece Royal Society Jazz Orchestra, from San Francisco, are renowned for authentically capturing the exciting sound of Big Band Swing, Hot Syncopated Jazz, Blues, and music of the Cotton Club. This is 1920's jazz ... not Swing
