Tens of thousands of Bangladeshi garment workers demanding higher salaries were met with rubber bullets and tear gas during a recent protest ooutside Dhaka, the capital of Bangladesh.

Garment workers are currently paid a minimum of just $24 a month following a 2006 agreement among manufacturers, unions and the government, but business is booming piling increasing amounts to work onto employees.

They are calling for the minumum wage to be increased to $70, but manufacturers say their profits are being squeezed as shoppers seek a bargain amid the global economic downturn.

Al Jazeera's Nicolas Haque reports.

  • Salam owners, please pay reasonable amount to the workers. Don't try to take

Their money. You know you are making

Millions. Pay them little extra. Those people really hard worker. Give them some time for

Pray. Remember the day of judgement, they

Will say Allah our owner never give us a chance to pray. This world not every thing.

    Fear Allah.

  • tsk tsk

  • please $pend wisely & eat HEMPseeds everyday

  • We need to support these workers through a world wide minimum wage. Workers are exploited when they are forced to compete against each other. A world wide minimum wage would help workers everywhere including western workers.

  • All they want is more money. Instead of organized strikes, maybe they should try organized sit-ins, factory workers did during the Great Depression. The workers would arrive at the factory but they would just sit there and not do anything. Even if the factory owners fired them, they would show up anyways. The factory owners responded because they weren't making any money. Maybe they should try to do the same thing.

  • Once people demand more pay and better living standards,

IT IS A SURE SIGN OF "DEVELOPMENT",

obviously you can't make WINE without busting a few grapes.

  • H&M use cheap labor. Thats mess up.

  • the police beating the poor.. what is so unusual about that.. unbelievable.. police are thugs.

  • thats why america needs to make her own stuff
