Hexx: Heresy of the Wizard (PC) (1994) (Psygnosis Limited)

Here is a game I only remember because I read a pretty scathing review of it in an obscure Swedish magazine called "High Score" back in 1994. I don't recall exactly why the reviewer didn't like it, but it was probably due to it's lack of originality (it's clearly an Ultima Underworld/Eye of the Beholder clone) and what seems to be extremely linear gameplay. Still, if one is interested in this particular kind of action RPG it might be worth checking out. By the way, "Hexx" was apparently a remake of a previous title called "Bloodwych" from 1989.

(One slightly surprising aspect is that you have to crank up the cycles all the way up to 12000-15000 in DOSBox in order to play this with reasonable speed (bad programming or just bad DOSBox compatibility?)

Two random thoughts: how wonderful was the lack of loading times back then in the 90's in PC games, and how unconfortable were dungeons crawlers in 3d. Ultima Underworld, IIRC, was at least as a nightmare to handle as this one.

Oh, loading times could be quite lengthy even in very old PC games. Since all my old games videos are recorded in DOSBox on a modern computer (and thus are optimized to ideal configurations which gamers back then could only dream of), none of them really gives an accurate representation of just how smoothly (or sluggishly) these games would actually run on the average gaming computer of the relevant time period...

Compared to Eye of the Beholder and the rest of the Gold Box games, this is very well made 1st-person dungeon crawler.

It's a shame that the quality of Psygnosis games turned to shit the closer their buyout got to them.

i enjoyed this on the PC way back when. it was so hard i had to cheat though! x)
