Thirty plus year old tiller starting again after not running for many years.

Finally got it running after doing the following:

Replacing the points and spark plug, still no spark
seated points with sandpaper got a spark.
Put back together no spark.
remove magneto and moved wires around, no spark,
remove magneto again add some insulation to one of the wires to prevent shorting
put magneto back on and finally got a spark again.
pull start failed and the metal tabs that hold plastic cord winder on break.
find old pull start from go-kart engine and see a bracket I could use.
put on old bracket and make new bracket to hold starter winder in place.
re-wind plastic cord winder which is usually a pain in the ass
install pull starter but would only run if fuel is poured in through carb.
clutch re-winder starts to screech, have to remove that and oil it
replaced pump diaphragm in carb. Still wouldn't run without help
removed gas tank and carb cleaned everything
tapped holes deeper for screws that hold on pump diaphragm cause they stripped.
made gasket for carb to block mating surface
put all back together still won't run without help.
remove carb and tank again and discover rust flakes blocking screen in pickup tube
cleaned and put back together final time and still won't run unaided.
decide to mess with needle valve.discover that its almost completely closed.
open needle vale to some random point, now runs just fine

As you can see I hate needle valves, I don't touch them unless I absolutely have too.

The block on the tiller has been replaced but everything else is original. Now if we can only find the depth gauge that attached to the back.

  • Check out the cojones on my 8hp wards, it just took me for a ride for the last hour in my yard, incredible. I was going to pick up one of those cheap electric cultivators for just over a hundred bucks. .. so pleased I didn't. It was very rewarding getting this one running again. I think it shook the neighbors houses when I was running it.

  • I have the exact some one.. do you know the belt size for the reverse and fwd belt? I have been looking for days trying to find the right belts.

I wish the video showed omre of the belt routing. you could help a lot of people with this info.

    Thanks,

    Scott.
