  • I found my handle started to come away from the pot as it dried where I had smoothed it out. The mug was dryer than leatherhard (but not white), could that be the problem?

  • Hi - yes sounds like the mug was too dry .Next time apply the handle sooner ! Leave your handles to stiffen a little before you apply them. SL

  • i always have trouble with handles...they are always uneven in thickness and get to thin...do you squeeze very lightly?

  • Hi , this is normal to start with so dont give up (Practice makes perfect )yes a slight continual squeeze as you pull down, but make sure the handle is 100% wet and your hand also. Refer to my clips, you see me dipping the handle in the water, as well as my hand being wet ...if you have a dry spot the handle will 'stretch' at that point and become thin.Keep at it ,& set yourself a target ,pull & pull & pull 25 , 30 till you crack it ! Good luck SL

  • had you ever had your pots get a twist when they are being thrown and then had them untwist when they fire making straight handles crooked? Someone told me this could happen on teapot spouts and I have been noticing a slant on some of my handles. The slant always seems to be going the same way and I just wondered if this is what was happening.

Thanks again for the awesome videos. I have been turning people at the clay studio on to your videos.

  • Hi , I think there is a certain screwing effect of clay shapes thrown on the wheel that occurs during the firing for which you can make some compensation for when you attach the handle or cut a teapot spout !

I hope my videoclips help all potters & would be potters alike . SL

  • you make everything look so easy... (and neat)

  • Hi Simon,

Thanks for your great teaching videos. A demo is so much more effective than pictures.

How many inches( from edge of board) long are the mug handles when you nip them off? I thought I'd draw a line on the board to keep them uniform.

Great tip about rounding the openings with another jar.

    Thank You,

    Catherine

  • You want "Happy Handles"!

  • I've seen the hadle demo a few times now and never stop being amazed how simple it looks and how hard it is to emulate but I will keep practicing and travel optomistically. These videos have been an ispiration.

  • Thanks Simon! I have learned so much by watching other potters on You Tube.

  • I just wanted to thank you for sharing your art. As you said, my pots are getting better with practice and my first handles begin today. Golden rule - "always support them". Life is good.....
