Orangutans are predicted to be extinct in the wild by 2020. Krista is one of 350 orphans at OFI's care center on the island of Borneo. Don't let it be time to say goodbye. Dear 1993DJC: Orangutans are endangered due to loss of habitat and illegal pet trade. We may be gentle-natured, but we are strong and don't make good pets and don't want to end up chained in an enclosure for a lifetime of sadness because we didn't remain tiny and manageable. Then compounding the problem for declining numbers: Orangutans do not reach sexual maturity for several years, have single births, and keep their young with them for a long time.
