Maybe thats why. I see yours is the 60 or 80 gb. I've got the 40 and when i was playing gta the fan made that noise yours did. but apparently it does tht because the inside of the ps3 is alot warmer. Maybe you should leave it off for maybe a day, and then see. or it may be tht its not in a well ventilated place. anyway i hope this helps :)
You should probably leave it off for a day or just a few hours less. And I know it's a 60Gb because it has the chrome finish, rather than the matte finish on the 40Gb versions. Anyway, reply back whenever your PS3 is up and running again!

i left it of for a day and found out it was one of my cooling fans so i took it of and it no longer makes that noise!!!
