Thank you for sharing you techniques, art & personality. This is a new hobby and II want to make a leather half face, nose to chin, biker mask. How would I go about shapping bottom of eye sockets to keep glasses from fogging up? Any insight would be appreciated. Chow

thank you so much for posting this! i am working on a costume for Dragon Con & wanted to make it myself. i have an art degree so it just doesn't feel right hiring someone, plus it's far more fun to do it myself(we'll see if i still say that afterwards).

he's using a vegetable tanned leather. Also it looks like he was using a shoulder cut rather than a belly, but I only got a quick look. Belly leather tends to be very stretchy, heads up. If you just want to get your feet wet, Tandy sells single shoulders which is about 5-6 feet of leather for about $30, sometimes its on sale for as low as $15. When I make masks I prefer the 5-6 oz. Its thick but its not so thick that you have to spend a whole lot of time skiving it down.

I know its late, but for those who asked, unfortunately no this technique does not work with vinyl or fake leather. Also it cannot be done with chrome tanned leather. So that pretty green leather you have had your eyes on, sorry it won't work with this technique. I'm not saying you shouldn't make a mask out of it, but the way shown in his video won't quite work. For this technique you'll need a vegetable tanned leather. also for skiving its easier on your tools if you wet the leather first
When you soak the leather doesn't the leather shrink when it drys?
