What distance is best between WHY Traps?
-
We have two traps at work, we bought back in 2009, and both are still in use, we did not buy the refill solution because we have figured out that in spring and early summer things like meat, vinegar mix and a little honey or syrup works at catching yellow jackets and european hornets. Right now, August, we are using a small amount of vinegar with syrup/honey to catch both of the above-have caught this summer about 6 dozen yellow jackets and several dozen european hornets.

I have had two traps up for many days now and one of them caught a moth. That's it.
I am taking them back to Lowe's and demanding a refund.

@byteusa Sorry, I didn't. In the end I just used a good exterminator and did the same this year. Good luck to you!

@songsofexperience7 Did you find any way to make it more effective since last year?
-
@krispyt99 So the top chamber is better with juice? What do you use in the bottom?

Just set a couple up around the yard. Hope it works...

*BEER*. They love beer!

Yellowjackets in the ground. Bought a reusable WHY trap with high expectations. Caught about 10 paper wasps, top chamber, maybe 6 yellowjackets, over 5 days. Not great results.
I've tried lots of other homemade traps from YouTube and the web, each with even more paltry results. Honey, fruit juice, jam, pop, sugar water... NOTHING.
Late in the yr but I may TRY bacon in a jar. Or just call an exterminator. Already stung.
So far not worth the $15.

I've found a better way to use this product. The design of the trap is great - bugs go in - they don't get out. I've found that instead of using the magic potion that comes with the product - these bugs are motivated by sweet - I filled my trap with sweet tea. It's be a little over 24 hours and there must be 60 yellow jackets in there. Amazing!!! Now I'll just wait for the tea to evaporate and the bugs to die. I'm sure anything with sugar in it would work. I haven't gotten any other bugs either.
First - it does work - you have to be smart with it and forget about the twisty ties, just use string. My question though is: what is the best way to clean it? I am worried that a few of the wasps would be still alive when I open it and also leaving a mess where the attractant will be out in the open and attract bees with no trap. So dropping it in a bucket of water outside to make sure they are dead doesn't seem like a great idea and I ain't going to bring it inside!

@driven2sin Make sure insects are dead before emptying -- to be sure, set it directly in the hot sun for several hours and that should do it. To empty the bottom chamber, unscrew the bottom cap, take the cone out and dump the dead insects into the trash. To empty the top chamber, unscrew the lid and pour the contents into the trash or onto the ground. If it's beyond the two week time period, the scent will no longer be attractive to the insects.

This trap has only caught 4 yellow jackets in my backyard and nothing else after a week.
The other yellow jacket trap they sell works way better, it caught tons of them in my backyard.

@mang182 It sounds like you have more yellowjackets than paper wasps in your yard. Some people have found our Yellowjacket Trap to work better if they do not have the other species of insects. I'm glad you found it useful.
