Music mix: La-33's incorporated boogaloo and mambo

Straight out of Bogota's urban jungle, midway through their first UK tour, La-33 showed off their old-school salsa dura with the sort of telepathic musicality hoped for in a 12-piece salsa orchestra. Especially one this hyped: La-33 have been Colombia's darlings ever since their wildly popular mambo version of the Pink Panther theme four years ago. Their current album, Gozalo, topped the national charts and is doing pretty well here.

Bandleader and electric bassist Sergio Mejias stood up front, nearly obscuring his brother Santiago on keyboards. A horn section blasted urgency into tracks old and new. Three lead singers swapped vocals, sang freestyle harmonies. "I don't love you anymore," one belted out in Spanish, over congas, timbales and cowbell.

Singer Malpelo shimmied in the Colombian flag and mock-promised us some (folky) cumbia. What we got instead was mambo, boogaloo and son montuno, along with a big dollop of humour. All wore red noses for La Pantera Mambo.

A rearranged version of The Police's Roxanne was weird, yet curiously compelling. With band members pogo-ing, salsa-ing and grinning like loons, things became so jubilant that you almost expected Ingrid Betancourt to turn up, playing guira.
