Watch this on the smaller setting; it is set for 320x240pixels.
With photographs taken every few seconds during the construction of The Pines Calyx timbrel vaulted domes, you are able to see the process of the construction. No sound on this (maybe later)to explain exactly what is happening, but the process is straight-forward to follow.

The first layer of light clay tiles are laid in concentric circles and held in free space with Plaster of Paris, setting firmly after 20mins. The form work is not to support the tiles, just to provide a guide for the people laying the tiles. After that, heavier clay tiles are laid at a different angle over the first layer. This builds strength. There are three tile layers in all, and the result is a dome with massive lateral strength - strong enough to park a 10tonne truck on them (if you could get it up there.)

In reality, the domes will support soil and grass for a living 'Kent Downland' roof that will blend naturally in with the bank that Pines Calyx nestles beside.

All the tiles are made from clay that was a waste material extracted from an aggregates pit a few miles from The Pines Calyx. The tiles were shaped by hand and fired by a local specialist company, Robus Tiles.
