Dothan received a new Pierce ladder truck to add to the fire department assets. The truck is a demo model that, according to Chief Larry Williams, saved the city money in acquisition costs, but, more importantly, build time. The city commission authorized the purchase three months ago.
The truck was carefully spec'd out by Battalion Chief Keith Gaster, and includes a 100 foot ladder with a water canon that can pump 1,000 gallons of water per minute. Everything is super sized from the hoses that supply the water to the massive gears that rotates the ladder turret.
Whoever goes to the top of the ladder doesn't get a free ride. The fire fighter has to climb to the top only when the ladder is fully extended, and has to do it while wearing over 100 pounds of gear.
Please excuse the long lead in on the video, but the sirens remind me of NYC fire trucks as they fight city traffic to go to the rescue. They have a special way to get driver's attention with the air horns. I am working to get Chief Williams let me ride a route comprised of the mayor's and commissioners' homes at 3:00am with me working the air horn, Yankee style!
