This is my 4runner transformed into a pick up with a 22r engine carb, 35 bf goodrich tires, stock 4.78 gears, 8" lift, Bj spacers and waiting for a SAS, this truck is making a paused RRR..RRR...RRR noise, it is not the timing chain (it is new) and belts new too, i think is the steering pump or the fuel pump, what do you think it is? i replaced all fluids, the engine receives good care. You can notice the sound if you pay attention..the sound comes along when i rev the engine. The engine runs great on street and has a lot of power and no smoke coming from tail pipe.

  • Did u ever figure out what the problem was?? This is happening to my truck right now an it's extrnrly frustrating

  • after changing oil, distributor cap, rotor, wires, fuel filters, spark plugs, agency oil filter, fuel pump, the truck runs very very good, but that strange sound is still there, man,,,,it is not the chain,..everything in there its new..too..but i am thinking about the steering pump..i need to flush it and we will see..the sound seems to come from there, i am pretty sure that the steering pump is my problem...if not well i will keep digging it is fun...

  • I am not hearing anything that does not sound like normal 22R sounds.

How long have you owned this truck?

  • i have owned this truck for about 10 years...the engine is fine..but if you listen carefully there is an rrr rrr sound, the timing chain is new, so ,i think the sound is coming from the steering pump, i am going to flush the system and drop in a good oil and we will see..i think that's the problem,,my oil looks like water.

  • had a similar sound from 20r. was freakin out so i called a friend's hotshit mechanic. he arrives, starts it and in 10 seconds he blurts out alternator. I instantly thought he was a Jcat or a moron, but he reaches in while the motor is running and with two hands grips around the alternator and the noise stoped. I had thought timing initially as well. He explained that sometimes they begin to come apart from the inside out and make crazy noises. Water like oil is no good, water in the oil or thin

  • dats sum mean truck! i like it!
