I hooked an old PS/2 keyboard and a vintage HPDL-2416 alphanumeric LED display up an ATmega168. You can type messages in with the keyboard and scroll them across the display. Messages can also be saved to EEPROM and retrieved after the power has been turned off.

The HPDL-2416 is an incredibly easy-to-use part; 4-character display, built-in memory, refresh circuitry, and ASCII decoder. Plus it just looks freaking awesome. Eventually I hope to get some more LED displays and make an AVR-based terminal. (probably with a serial, USB, or Ethernet link!)
