In classical mythology, the phoenix was a gorgeous bird which resembled an eagle and had sumptuous red and gold feathers. The bird was said to live 500 or 600 years in the deserts of Arabia, before burning itself to ashes on a funeral pyre ignited by the sun and fanned by its own wings, only to rise from its ashes with renewed youth and vigor to live through another 500 or 600 years! 

The ancient Greek writer Herodotus, considered the father of history, spoke about this wonderful phoenix, and this bird was named, indirectly, after the Phoenicians and the color red.

The Phoenicians, who invented the purple dye we talked about in an earlier video, were a tan, almost reddish color of people and the Greeks referred to them by the Greek word for dark red, phoinos, or Phoenicians. Since the bird was of a similar color, the phoenix, from dark red as well.

The story of the phoenix was handed down for generations and today, to rise from the ashes like a phoenix symbolizes overcoming a seemingly insurmountable setback.
